Electricity consumption in Romania in January 2023 amounted to 4.3 TWh

According to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), electricity consumption in Romania in January 2023 amounted to 4.3 TWh, which is 10.6 % less compared to 2022.

The data shows that industrial electricity consumption reached 3.16 TWh, which is 10.9 % less compared to last year. Household electricity consumption amounted to 1.1 TWh, which is a 9.6 % decrease. Public lighting consumption dropped by 19.1 % amounting to some 44 GWh.

Total electricity production reached 5.59 TWh in January 2023, which is 1.9 % more compared to the same month in 2022. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 3.7 % and reached 1.99 TWh.

Production in hydropower plants increased by 23.6 % to 1.58 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda decreased by 0.9 % to 1.03 TWh. Production of wind power in January 2023 dropped by 8.1 % compared to the same month in 2022, reaching 937.4 GWh. Solar power production reached 50 GWh, 35.6 % less compared to 2022.

Electricity exports in January 2023 amounted to 1.15 TWh, which is by 109.8 % more compared to the same month in 2022. At the same time electricity imports decreased by 21.4 % and amounted to 445.2 GWh.

Total production of primary energy resources in January 2023 amounted to 1,579 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 1.3 % more than in 2022. Coal production reached 200.9 million tons of oil equivalent (- 12.4 %), oil production reached 243 million tons of oil equivalent (- 4.1 %), while production of natural gas reached 661.3 million tons of oil equivalent (+ 7.5 %).
