Romanian electricity producer Hidroelectrica announced that it has commissioned a hydropower plant Bretea on the Strei river in western Romania. The new HPP has installed capacity of 12 MW.
This is also the first automated plant, remotely controlled – a technology that will be deployed to each of Hidroelectrica’s 200 hydropower plants in operation. The construction of HPP Bretea, which started in 2008, cost around 50 million euros.
CEO of Hidroelectrica Bogdan Badea said that it is very important that the company adds new megawatts to the system, especially at a time when Romania needs more and more power capacities marked with a quick transition from conventional energy towards green energy, which raises many problems for the whole energy system.
Hidroelectrica’s power plants have a total installed capacity of over 6,400 MW.
